Donald “Barney” L. Barnthouse, age 82, resident of Plymouth, Ohio passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at home near Shelby, Ohio. He was born on August 4, 1939 in Willard, Ohio to the late Mary (Lillo) Barnthouse-Stewart and Paul W. Barnthouse.

Don was a 1958 Plymouth High School graduate who worked briefly for the former RR Donnelley’s and then went to work for and retired from the Fate-Root-Heath Company, later known as Plymouth Locomotive. Following his graduation, Don also joined the Army Reserves. A man of strong faith, he was a dedicated member of First Lutheran Church of Plymouth.

Don’s community was very important to him and it was shown in his commitment to the various organizations in Plymouth; a founder and past President of the Plymouth Area Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Award and the International Presidents Award; a member of the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce; a major contributor to organizing and volunteering with the Plymouth Silver King Festival; and enjoyed volunteering at the Plymouth Area Historical Society.

Supporting the Plymouth area schools was another passion of Don’s; he was a founder and past treasurer for the Plymouth High School Viking Academic Booster Club; a past Plymouth School board member; recently inducted into the Plymouth High School Hall of Fame as a member of the undefeated 1956 Football team; and loved supporting and volunteering at many of the sporting events.

When Don wasn’t busy with supporting his community, he enjoyed traveling and finding the best restaurants in each town he visited. His love of food was also shown through his acre of a garden he would plant every year and his regular attendance at the Blooming Grove produce auctions during his retirement years. Always in his shorts, Don will be remembered as a caring, giving and dedicated man in both his family and community.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Janice (Bowman) Barnthouse whom he married on October 4, 1962; two children, Kris (Ruby) Barnthouse and Holly (Dan) Workman; three grandchildren, Samuel and Madeline Barnthouse and Sydney Workman; sister, Barbara Hamman; brother-in-law, John (Blanche) Bowman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Joyce (Harold) Craig.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Secor Funeral Home in Plymouth on Monday, April 4, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Blanche Tyree officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth. Memorial contributions can be made to Plymouth Area Lions Club or Plymouth High School Viking Academic Booster Club. I am very saddened to hear of Don's passing. Plymouth has lost one of it's long time dedicated community members. It is hard to find someone with Don's dedication, kindness, willingness to help, taking time to be there and of couse, the man in the shorts, no matter the weather. This small town has lost a huge pillar. My prayers, thoughts and love to Janice and the family. Bumper and Mary Jo always called Don the best of friends.
