Herbert C. Kempf, age 78 , of Scharf St., New Washington, passed away on Monday, June 25, 2007 at Bucyrus Community Hospital. He was born April 4, 1929 in Crawford County and grew up on the family farm near Shelby Settlement. He lived in New Washington since 1953. He was a member & staunch supporter of St. Bernard Catholic Parish. During his life he was an employee of Wilkins Air Force Base, Bucyrus Community Hospital & St. Bernard’s Parish. He was a U.S Army Veteran, serving in the Korean conflict & was a member of the American Legion Post 405. He was an avid gardener and a charter member of the Cranberry Hills Euchre Club.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen S. (Durnwald) Kempf, who he married Oct. 11, 1952; 5 daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara & Paul Forster of New Washington, Patricia & Randy Brown of Norwalk, Marilyn & Dennis LePore of Bainbridge, Ohio, Janet & Grant Myers of Huron and Diane & Darren Majoy of Sandusky; 4 sons and daughters-in-law, Michael & Kim Kempf of Sycamore, Richard & Laurie Kempf of Ft. Wayne, IN, Gary & Marianne Kempf of Shelby and Douglas & Marilyn Kempf of Mansfield; 17 grandchildren; and 1 great grandson; 7 siblings, Denis (Sharon) Kempf, Jane (Robert) Ruhe, Milton (Eleanor) Kempf all of Crestline, Harlan Kempf, Thomas (Linda) Kempf of Galion, Regine (John) Kreim of Shelby and Judith Kempf of Arizona.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clair and Alvena (Hook) Kempf and a sister Mary (Joseph) Kreim.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at 2pm Thursday, June 28 at St. Bernard’s Church in New Washington. A funeral mass will follow at 3pm with Fr. Robert Dendinger officiating. Burial will be at the St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in New Washington. Because of Herb’s strong ties to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and School, the family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the St. Bernard School Endowment Fund.
