James D. Carpenter, age 89 a lifelong resident of Willard, Ohio passed away on April 21, 2025 at the Willow’s in Willard. He was born on October 14, 1935 in Willard, Ohio to the late Rolla and Martha (Schultz) Carpenter.
Jim was a 1954 graduate of Willard High School; he was the football captain and the Harlow Stapf winner of his class. After graduation, he went on to proudly serve our country in the United States Army where he served in Korea. He worked at General Motors in Sandusky for 38 years, and was a proud member of the Local Union 913. After retiring from there, he delivered meals on wheels, and worked as a grounds keeper for the Willard City School system. Jim was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Willard, Ohio. He was an umpire and little league coach for many years in Willard. Jim’s family would like to thank the staff at the Willow’s in Willard for their outstanding care for their loved one.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth Carpenter; daughters, Carol Carpenter and Ann Carpenter; grandchildren, Kara (Matthew) Eldridge, Kaci (Kaleb) Foster, CJ Carpenter and Hope Carpenter; 6 great grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis A. Carpenter; 2 sisters, Evelyn Johnston and Lenoa Zeigler; 7 brothers, Paul, Raymond, Eugene, Robert, Gerald, Everett and Phillip Carpenter.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the First United Methodist Church from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. where his funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Gifford officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Willard Ohio where military honors will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Willard Athletic Boosters or Dementia Society of America. I'm so sorry to read of Jim's passing. I worked with Jim when I first started at NDH he was a wonderful coworker and I always enjoyed his subtle since of humor. I know he will truly be missed.

Carol & Ken, when Jerry was in the Willows for a couple weeks for rehabilitation, we had the pleasure of reconnecting with Jim and sharing a couple of meals with him and reminiscing about the "Good old days" of raising our kids and all the sports they were a part of. I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time caring for Jim for a couple of years. He was a good man. He talked of his kids and grandkids and grandkids often and how much he loved them!
