Joseph D. Sukola, age 81, resident of Willard passed away Monday, March 21, 2005 in Willard Mercy Hospital following a short illness. He was born on August 30, 1923 in Willard to the late John and Rosalie (Nerad) Sukola and had been a life long Willard resident. Mr. Sukola was a retired brakeman fom the B & O Railroad and a veteran of the US Army serving during WWII in the European Theater as a paratrooper. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He loved nature and was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. (Schill) Sukola whom he wed Nov. 9, 1946; one son and a daughter-in-law, Jay D. and Linda Sukola of Dublin, OH; four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda J. and David Michielini of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; Kathy Jo and Ric Shellhammer of Oceanside, CA; Patti A. and Barry Stinson of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; Judy L. and Wayne Shupp of New Haven, OH; six grandchildren, Amber, Jason, Lucas, Corinthia, Nicolas and Wyatt;special nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, John Burda and one sister, Rosalie Groh.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Melvin Verhoff officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Willard. Calling hours will not be observed. Memorial expressions can be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society. Secor Funeral Home in Willard assisted the family with arrangements.
The Sukola family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the staff at Willard Mercy Hospital for their wonderful care they provided in Joe’s final hours.
