Mary L. Smith, age 79, a long time resident of Plymouth, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 24, 2011 at MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield, Ohio. She was born on July 21, 1932 in Cass Township, Richland County, Ohio, to the late William R. and Hazel E. (Swanger) Russell. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Shiloh High School and had worked as a clerk for the former Roethlisberger Transfer Co. in Shelby and retired from the Plymouth Elementary School where she was the secretary. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Shiloh American Legion Auxilary. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s school and sports activities, watching Plymouth High School basketball games, crocheting and making Christmas ornaments.
She is survived by her son, Rob (Marcella) Smith of Mansfield; two granddaughters, Taylor and Carly Smith of Mansfield; sister-in-law, Marie Russell of Columbus; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and wonderful care-giver, Barb Gerber of Willard.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 58 years, Robert D. Smith who passed away on August 26, 2011; three brothers, Charles (Nita) Russell, Robert Russell and R. Eugene (Betty) Russell.
Friends may call on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the Secor Funeral Home in Plymouth, Ohio from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church Plymouth, Ohio, with Rev. Carol Kilgore officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Shiloh, Ohio. Memorial contributions can be made out to the Plymouth/Shiloh Athletic Boosters or to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. My sincere condolences to your family. Aunt Mary was a joy to be around and she will be missed by all. I remember as a small child seeing her drive a tractor pulling a wagon load of hay, her wedding day, and many visits with her and Uncle Bob. She is now with the love of her life!

You have my sincere sympathy in the passing of your mom.It’s still a little shocking for me but now she is in the place where she wants to be and that is with your dad. I have wonderful memories of both your folks and so glad I was welcomed into their home/lives to help care for them their last few years of life.They will forever be in my heart.
