Philip K. “Poppy” Barkhurst, age 79, resident of Willard, Ohio passed away on Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Mercy Willard Hospital. He was born on June 20, 1935 in Morgan County, Ohio to the late Dewitt and Charlotte (Miller) Barkhurst. Mr. Barkhurst was a 1953 graduate of M and M High School and was the owner of the Dairy Whip Restaurant in Malta, Ohio for 28 years. He had served in the Ohio National Guard, was a former mayor of Malta, Ohio serving thirteen years, a volunteer fireman and a Free Mason. He loved to go hunting and golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Joan K. (Kimble) Barkhurst; a daughter, Teresa Long of Gurnee, IL; a son, Philip Barkhurst of Columbus; three step-children, Tim LePontois of Granville, OH; Alison LePontois of North Fairfield; and Renee (Scott) Wallace of Shelby; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Kirkbride of McConnelsville, OH; and Kathy (Bob) Wilson of Groveport, OH; two brothers, Jack Barkhurst of Delaware, OH; and Paul (Dottie) Barkhurst of Malta, OH.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, Steve and Dick Barkhurst.
Friends may call at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard, Ohio on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM where the funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM with Pastor Luigi Perez officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in the Greenwood Cemetery in Willard. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Grace United Methodist Church. Joanie and family…my thoughts and prayers are with you. I remember Phil as a friendly man who seemed larger than life May your memories of him and the stories people relate about him comfort you in the coming days.
So sorry to hear about Phil, he hired me at the dairy queen, I had 3 days to make a proper ice cream cone! I will never forget him, he was one of a kind, he would help anyone. Thoughts and prayers with you and the family through this difficult time.

We are so sorry to hear of Phil’s passing. He provided me with a lot of support after I lost my Dad for which I am truly greatful. My best memories include hanging out around the house and Dari Whip and Phil hollering his signature line “Hey Bud” every time he saw us. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Take care.
Joanie we are so sorry, but as we said via phone today Phil is no longer in pain. We serve an awesome God and we know Phil is safe in God’s arms. We love you both and we have wonderful memories to cherish forever.
