Wilbur Gene Montgomery, age 85, resident of Willard, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at The Willows at Willard. He was born in “Shawnee Holler,” Paintsville, Kentucky on March 31, 1941 to the late Marion Lee Montgomery and Amanda Alice (Tackett) Montgomery.

Our dad proudly served the US Army during the Vietnam era. He was stationed in Germany and earned his marksmanship with M14 rifles and marksmanship with missiles, all while serving in a Radar Hawk Missile Unit.

Our dad was a master of many things, and he would share his knowledge with anyone willing to listen. He was a master mechanic, electrician and contractor.

Dad also had many passions. The “need for speed” tops the list as he would race anything and made many friends at Summit Speedway in Norwalk, Ohio. He loved playing pool and was an arm-wrestling legend. People would come from all around just for the challenge of taking Wilbur down. No one ever did!

Dad and Mom would haul us kids all over the place, house-to-house and church-to-church to sing, all done at very young ages, as young as 5 years old. He was a very proud dad of all his children.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, who he married November 4, 1967; 4 children, Wilbur Scott (Jody) Montgomery of Plymouth, Lana (Jerry) Robinson of Plymouth, David (Sandy) Montgomery of Plymouth and Valerie (Chester) Castle of Shiloh; bonus son, Abe Jr. (Carrie) Shepherd of Plymouth; 18 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Wilbur was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Cathryn; brothers, James Donald, Willard Lee, Ben Frank, Mac Donald, James Harold, Clifford Dempsey, Jessee Lee and two infant brothers; and granddaughter, Cassie Faye-Ann Campo.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Living Truth Community Church, 631 S Main Street in Willard, on Monday, July 20, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Wilbur’s funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Wilbur’s son, Pastor David Montgomery, will be officiating his service and burial with full military honors will immediately follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in New Haven.
