Clarinda Snipes, 68, died Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center succumbing to a lengthy illness.
Born August 7, 1935 in Kite, Knott County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Irvin and Rebecca (Thornsbury) Slone, Clarinda spent her childhood in the pastoral hills. After moving to the Willard area in 1952 she wed Lawrence E. “Bob” Snipes on January 5, 1957 and raised a family. She was employed by the Pioneer Rubber Company and then Brunswick Manufacturing from 1956 until her illness in 1989. A devout Christian, she practiced the Old Regular Baptist belief.
Clarinda loved to travel and photograph her adventures. However her lifelong interests stemmed from her simple mountain upbringing. She sang bluegrass and was quite an accomplished yodeler. As an avid quilter many a newlyweds’ bed was graced with one of her hand-sown quilts. Similarly, she crocheted – doilies to doll clothes. Family always came first, especially the children. Although her grandchildren: Mandi, Matt, Joshua, Gary, Keleigh, Shayne, and Erik, held a special place in her heart, she loved babies. Each new member of her extended family was personally welcomed with a hand crocheted sweater set and day blanket. Clarinda was a loving and caring matriarch.
She is survived by her husband, two sons and daughter-in-laws, Robert and Jeanne of Crestline, and Lawrence Keith and Rhonda of Willard; and one daughter, Donna Myers of Albion, Michigan. Her surviving siblings are: Jaunita Johnson of Woodhaven, Michigan; Elveta Jowett of Atascadero, California; Nawana Paniccia of Chatsworth, California; Roscoe Slone of Monticello, Kentucky; Cleophas Slone of Hustonville, Kentucky; Aaron Slone of Hustonville, Kentucky; and Clifford Slone of Norwalk, Ohio. Preceding her in death was a brother, Gary Slone.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Secor Funeral Home, 202 West Maple Street, Willard. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 7, with Rev. Michael Slone officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Willard.
