Edith Ann Divers Painter, 63, passed away peacefully at her home on February 27, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born December 30, 1952 in Oberlin to the late Harold L. “General” Divers and Marianne E. Ashbrook Divers.
She was a 1971 graduate of Western Reserve High School. She graduated from The Ohio State University in 1975 with a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She obtained her Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from The Ohio State University in 1984.
She briefly worked for The Ohio State University, The Ohio Exposition Commission, and in retail management before dedicating her career to education. She first taught Home Economics, and was later a Guidance Counselor and Special Needs Coordinator at Willard City Schools. She did many things to promote educational advancement including being one of the early advocates of students to take non-traditional courses in Home Economics and Shop in Junior High as well as establishing one of the initial high school career days involving local industries and employers. She was awarded the prestigious Ohio’s Career Education Association award in 1995 for her career day work. Outside of her profession, Edie was also very active in giving back to her community. She served the City of Willard as a Firefighter, EMT, and Rescue Diver. During her service to the city, she also helped coordinate the Miss Flame program and wrote the script for the several of the first Mock Accidents to promote the awareness of drinking and driving dangers. Edie was also an advocate and facilitator of many teen and community outreach programs, as well as a leader of the Willard Boy Scout Troop and a 4-H supporter while her children were young. She was a member of WEA, OEA, NEA, as well as a Lifetime member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Member of the Huron County Genealogy Society. She was also an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she helped with and taught Bible School when her children were young.
Edie did many other things throughout her life such as holding several professional positions like, WEA Vice President and President, and National Honor Society advisor. Her giving nature led to her being selected for awards such as the Paul Harris Fellow by the Willard Rotary and as Huron County Child and Family Professional of the Year in 2007.
Edie is survived by her husband of 38 years, Mark, whom she married October 30, 1977, their 3 children and spouses: Kent (Becky), and granddaughter Emmy Painter of Huron, Ross (Lindsay) Painter of Willard, and Carisa Painter of Willard.
She is also survived by a sister, Dorothy (Tom) McGuinness of Mansfield, TX, a brother King (Deb) Divers of Milan, her mother-in-law, Naomi Painter of Willard, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be at Secor Funeral Home in Willard, Ohio on Friday, March 4, 2016 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Willard on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Janet Wittenmyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Willard. Memorial contributions may be made to: Trinity Lutheran Church in Willard.
