Haley Bergman, age 15, of Willard, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008, at her home. She was born July 22, 1992, at Norwalk, Ohio, to Jim and Sophie Bergman. She was a freshman at the Willard High School, where she played in the orchestra and also played the clarinet and piano. Haley had a Technician Amateur Radio License and was a member of the Trailblazers 4-H Saddle Club.
Haley, mature well beyond her fifteen years, shared her gift of love and friendship with her family and her friends. She was a special young woman whose bravery and determination to fight cancer was admired by all those who loved and knew her. She never complained of pain or reflected her frustration with her illness. Thus, she was nicknamed “Rocky” by her doctors and nurses at Akron Children’s Hospital.
Haley was one “smart cookie”. She possessed a passion for learning that was astounding, earning numerous awards for her accomplishments. She excelled in all aspects of her life; her studies, her writing, computer technology, horsemanship and so on.
Her greatest passion was horses. She loved her horses and fulfilled her dream of becoming an accomplished horse woman. Her dream began with a family vacation to Nashville a few years ago. She and her family visited a famous horse farm in Kentucky and from that experience her fondness for horses emerged. It wasn’t long thereafter, that she met “Bo” the quarter horse whose friendship helped her accomplish her dream. She loved showing “Bo” at horseshows and the highlight of her summers was the Huron County Fair. Soon thereafter, her horses Bazooka and Cutie Pie came into her life. Her horses provided her such pleasure and happiness. Even, at the point when she was no longer physically able to ride, she loved watching them “horsing around” in the pasture.
As you can tell these paragraphs are being written on behalf of her family, friends and all who loved her and whose lives she touched. We are the fortunate ones for having known Haley and for the privilege of having been a part of her life.
She is survived by her parents, Jim & Sophie (Getz) Bergman; sister, Cheryl Bergman at home; maternal grandparents, Mary Getz and the late John Getz; paternal grandparents, Jim Bergman and the late Ruth (Krynock) Bergman; cousins, Jenny & Jason Boggs of San Marcos, CA, Kelly, Cameron, and Carson Parrish of San Marcos, CA, Amy, Todd, Nik and Lexie Brown of Fremont, OH, Ashley, Skip, and Sienna Turner of Clyde, OH, Mike Pressler of Fremont, OH, Jason Lydy of Columbus,OH, and Ashley Lydy of Willard, OH, Aunt Deb (Rick) Greiner of Fremont, OH, Aunt Ann Coffman of Escondido, CA, Aunt Becky (Neil) Lydy of Willard, OH and Aunt Sandy Getz of Dixon, CA
She is preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, John Getz, paternal grandmother, Ruth (Krynock) Bergman, and her great grandmother, Mary Bishop.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard. The funeral service will be Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at 11:00 A.M., at the First United Methodist Church in Willard, with Pastor Lynda K. Masters officiating. Burial will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in New Haven, Ohio. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Akron, OH, the Akron Children’s Hospital or to the New Haven United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.secorfuneralhomes.com

My heart goes out to Haley’s family and I offer my deepest sympathy during this difficult time. Haley seemed like a very beautiful woman inside and out. I wish she would have been able to stay with us longer, but she is now at peace. I’d like to share a poem with you that someone passed on to me.
THE DASH By Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood up to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That she had spent alive on the earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash –
What matters most is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about it long and hard . . .
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what is true and real,
And try to understand
The way other people feel.
Be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more,
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved them before.
Treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering this special dash
Might only last a while.
So when your eulogy is being read,
With your life’s actions to rehash,
Would you be proud of the things they say,
About how you spent your dash?

My sympathies to your family for the loss of your beautiful daughter. What a neat young lady she was. Cancer is an unforgiving disease which takes those that we love; our granddaughter passed away at the age of 15 in 2003 of Neuroblastoma and it is still very difficult for us to bear the loss. Haley will never go away in your hearts and will always be with you.

Dear family of Haley:
You do not know me nor do I know Haley or your family. I read the obituaries daily in the Fremont News Messenger and came across Haley’s. I was deeply saddened to hear of someone so young and losing their life to cancer. You have my condolences and are in my thoughts and prayers. I can’t imagine losing someone so young. She truly sounds like she was an incredible person and an inspiration to those who knew her. I am a school nurse at Woodmore and have a team who has been walking in the Sandusky County Relay for Life for the past 2 years. We have a walk coming up June 20-21 at Connor Park in Fremont and will be walking for those who are survivors as well as those who have passed this life due to cancer. Someday we will find a cure! In the meantime, we walk remembering those special people who have been stricken with this awful disease, and who made such an impact to those they knew during their time on earth. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
