James E. Kaple, age 83, of New Washington, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 9, 1923 in New Washington, Ohio to the late Bernard & Anna (Martin) Kaple.
He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in New Washington, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Jim was very involved in the St. Vincent DePaul Society, where he served as president. He was a US Army Veteran serving during World War II, where he was a guard at the German Prisoner of War Camp in El Reno, OK. Jim was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and loved listening to music. In 1974 he was awarded best looking beard at the New Washington Bicentennial Celebration.
Jim was very devoted to his wife and children and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also loved to take care of his home, yard and feeding the birds and squirrels.
Jim was part owner of the Kaple Lumber Company in Shiloh, Ohio. Many of his years were spent harvesting timber and retired as President of the company in 1983. In 1984, he was awarded for outstanding Logger by Ohio Forestry Association. Jim and Doris enjoyed traveling during their retirement years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris (Alt) Kaple, whom he wed on April 27, 1943; five daughters, Kathleen (Thomas) Dechant of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Jean Wurm of New Washington, Ohio, Christine (Mark) Yosick of New Washington, Ohio, Sarah (Joseph) Nye of New Washington, Ohio, and Teresa (David) Faeth of New Washington, Ohio; two sons, Benedict (Marilyn) Kaple of Fairborn, Ohio and Andrew (Janet) Kaple of New Washington, Ohio; twenty-one grandchildren, Stefan Dechant, Sarah Augustine, Gregory Kaple, Daniel Kaple, Stephanie Kaple, Matt Kaple, Ted Kaple, Jessice Beskur, Jacqui Carver, Carly Burger, Claire Wurm, Anna O’Brien, Tonya Samuel, Josh Yosick, Christopher Nye, Laura (Nye) Finnegan, Luke Nye, Rachael Nye, Nick Faeth, Zach Faeth, and Alexandra Faeth; seven great grandchildren, Agatha and Beatrice Augustine, Claire and Drew Kaple, Isabella Beskur, Ryan Carver, and Gianna Samuel; sister, Patricia (Sonny) Wechter of New Washington; sister-in-law, Dorothy Kaple of New Washington; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Mark Wurm; and granddaughter, Emily Wurm; five brothers, Bud, Vincent, John, Fr. Timon and Donald Kaple; and three sisters, Martina Shakelford, Dolores Uhl and Joan Ervin.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2007 from 5-8 P.M. at the Secor Funeral Home in New Washington. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 6, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Bernard Catholic Church in New Washington, with Father Gary Stakem officiating. Burial will be at the St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in New Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, OH 44805, St. Bernard’s School Endowment Fund or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
