Jean Marie (Meyers) Buurma Scadden, 93 years young, was called to her heavenly home on November 21, 2021.

Jean was the middle of three daughters born to Harry and Dorothy Meyers in Midland Park, New Jersey on January 24, 1928. She grew up with a love of sports, especially ice skating, baseball, and horseback riding. She was encouraged by an aunt to write letters to young men serving in Word War ll. On July 4, 1946, she met one of her pen pals, Frank Buurma, who had recently returned from a tour of duty liberating prisoners from Dachau concentration camp. They were married on June 5, 1947 in Willard, Ohio, and enjoyed 35 years of happily married life. They raised 4 sons and Jean was very active at the
Willard Christian Reformed Church, the Willard hospital, the Willard Golf Club, and the 20th Century Club. She loved flower arranging and made bouquets for the front of church and at Kingwood Center. She loved beauty in all its forms and taught herself in many arts including interior decorating, fashion, cake decorating, and entertaining.

After Frank died on June 6, 1982, she moved to Florida and spent 30 years in Jupiter and Port St. Lucie. There she met David Scadden and they were married in 1989. Together, they enjoyed golf, travel, and ballroom dancing. They started a chapter of Friendship Force in Port St. Lucie and travelled the world, making friends wherever they went. David passed away in 1996 and Jean remained in St. Lucie West, staying busy with flowers arranging shows, orchid society functions, and driving her classic car to auto shows. She was actively engaged in the rapidly growing Sonlight Community Church and had many dear Christian brothers and sisters there.
She returned to Willard, Ohio in 2012 to be close to her children, 13 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. Throughout the transitions and challenges, Jean remained in her faith and shared her optimism and humor. She was preceded in death by her sister Carolyn and is survived by her dear sister Harriet Bogard of McBain, Michigan, her sons Bruce (Cheryl) Buurma of Willard, Jake (Faye) Buurma of San Jose, CA, Loren (Joy) Buurma of Willard, and Henry (Mary) Buurma of Willard.

Calling hours will be Friday, December 3, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Willard Christian Reformed Church in Celeryville, Ohio, where the funeral service will be Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Len Riemersma officiating. There will be luncheon to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Celeryville Christian School. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.secorfuneralhomes.com.
