Winston Hayes was born in Doerun, Georgia on July 1, 1933 to Henry and Marie (Jackson) Hayes. He died on Thursday, February 23, 2006 at Rae- Ann Nursing Facility in Cleveland, Ohio.
Winston and his wife, the former Sadie M. Smith, were a couple since 1970 when they met at her Aunt Lillian Harris’ home in Chicago, Illinois. In July of 2004 they finally heeded family members’ plea and agreed to move to Willard, Ohio.
Besides his wife, Winston is survived by four sisters: Lillie Mae Hayes and Marie Hayes of New York City and Adele Blackshear of Doerun and Perline of Chicago; a niece, Mildred Thomas, a great-niece, Adele Fuller, both of Doerun and a nephew, John (Ralph) McKenzie of Columbus, Ohio as well as host of other family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and several brothers & sisters.
Although Sadie and Winston did not have children, they were very close to their nieces and nephews, especially Lynne Gregory (who came from Massachusetts and cared for them from July to November of 2005); Lolita Harris who was their go-to person in Willard and Valerie Saunders who facilitated the move from Chicago to Willard and Suzanne VanLeer, Sylvia Halbert, Thelma Smith, Drue Bass and Donal Taylor who helped with driving and/or packing tasks. Aaliyah Karim was Winston’s major supporter while in Cleveland and Cheryl Thompson-Taylor, also of Cleveland, kept him supplied with his favorite deserts and other food items he loved.
Members of Willard First Baptist Church, especially A.B. Scott , Karon Hampton and Kim & Greg Hargrove were helpful to Winston during the time he lived in Willard.
Although Winston was not well during the Willard years, those who knew him earlier remember him as a humorous & generous human being.
‘We know not where His islands lift their fronded palms in air
We only know we cannot drift beyond His loving care…’
