Dr. Ellsworth Lowell (Putt) Friedley, 81, died in Pompano Beach, Florida, on April 11. He was born near Carrothers, Ohio, on October 5, 1925. He lived in New Washington, Ohio, Crawford County, until he graduated from high school.
He was preceded in death by parents, Niles Clinton and Lydia (Lutz) Friedley, and two brothers, Harold Raymond Friedley and Rolland W. Friedley. He is survived by brother, Clinton J. (Charlene) Friedley of Worthington; four nieces, Carol Keplinger of Ashland, Ohio, Carlene (Todd) Baumann of Westerville, Ohio, Blythe Friedley of New Washington and Debbie (Jay) Hickenlooper of Apollo Beach, Fl.; great niece and nephews, Robert and Jeffrey Keplinger, Michelle and Alex Baumann, and Scott, Keith and Todd McDougal; great great nieces and nephew are Aiden, Mia, and Mara McDougal.
From 1944-1946 he served in the 138th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II.
After graduating from Capital University in 1949 and Cincinnati Medical School in 1953, he served his medical internship, surgical residency and a radiology residency at St. Luke Hospital in Cleveland from 1953 to 1961. He practiced radiology at St. Luke Hospital until he retired in 1989.
He was a member of the Ohio State Medical Association, American Medical Association, Cleveland Radiological Society, and the Academy of Medicine. He was also a National patron of the Metropolitan Opera, Cleveland Opera, and Lyric Opera of Cleveland.
During schooling and his medical internship he served as a church organist at several Lutheran churches. Also, he was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers State Bank of New Washington.
Dr. Friedley, along with his late brother Rolland, were generous benefactors of Tiffin University. Friedley Hall, the first permanent residence hall on the campus, was named in their honor in 1991. He was instrumental in starting and funding The Rolland W. Friedley – Farmers State Bank Memorial Scholarship in his late brother’s memory for area students. Recently, the Bridgewater House was added to the campus to memorialize his late friend, Maxwell Bridgewater , III.
In 1999, he gave a generous monetary gift to Capital University. The bell tower and promenade at the new Capital Center Sports Complex was named in his honor.
The Funeral service will be held on Wednesday April 18, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Washington, Ohio, where Dr. Friedley served as organist while in high school. Friends may call at the church at 10:00 a.m. before the funeral service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
