James R. Wiles, age 55, formerly of Willard, Ohio, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2012 with his family at his side. He was born on November 28, 1956 in Willard Ohio, to the late Allen “Russ” Wiles and Helen (Colich) Wiles. After graduating from Willard High School in 1975, he was an assistant golf pro at the Oberlin Country Club for several years until returning to the family farm. In the tradition of his grandfather, father, and brother, Jim was a lifelong farmer. He was proud of and enjoyed his life as a farmer despite the hard work and long hours. Hard work was something Jim and his siblings learned from their father and mother growing up on the family farm. When he was growing up, the Wiles farm was the gathering place for the extended family. He often told stories of all the fun he had playing with his many cousins, while his mother prepared a home-cooked meal for them all.
The last 4 years of his life, Jim also worked as the Greenhouse Supervisor for Wiers Farms where he enjoyed new relationships with his co-workers. He loved golf, a sport taught to him by his Uncle Jake when he was a little boy. He had a great deal of fun in the Tuesday Night Golf League for many years. Jim was a dog lover and particularly loved Canterbury (“the greatest dog that ever lived” according to Jim) and Lexie. He was a proud Republican and enjoyed following state and national politics. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his children, golfing trips with his brother Bill, and going to auctions and watching old musicals with his wife, Susan. Jim was a former member and board member of the Willard Golf Club; and a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Willard where he served as valet.
In seventh grade, Jim told a classmate he was going to marry Susan Holmes some day and that is exactly what he did on September 5, 1982. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his devoted children: Whitney Wiles at home, Haley Wiles of Arizona, and Landon Wiles at home; a brother William (Marie) Wiles and a sister, Judy (Tom) Oney; many close cousins and treasured friends. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother John who was also his life-long business partner.
He was loyal to his wife, his family, and his friends and was deeply committed to the values he believed in. His family is forever grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from all those who also loved Jim.
Friends may call at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard, Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held at the Willard Christian and Missionary Alliance Church on Sunday at 1:30 PM. The Reverend Barton McKelvey will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Willard. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of memorial donations to the Missions Committee of the Willard Christian Alliance Church, 1609 S. Conwell Avenue, Willard OH 44890. To the Jim Wiles Family- I moved from Willard around 1993, I played a game Jim loved- golf- I
will always remember Jim- as a friend, very polite, caring, professional, family man, hardworking, and very respectful to others- which to me is my tribute to jim- I have been thinking about jim since I got the call a day or 2 ago. Jim reminds me to love my family, take time to help others, and always do the respectful duty, no matter what it is.Jim was different than most, a man of principle and god. To Sue- you don’t know me- but I can tell you this, Jim’s values, love and respect will expressed by your family.
Jim has given me a time to reflect.
Sincerely Don and Sue Blocker, Dover, ohio
