Norman L. Gumbert, age 84, resident of Willard, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at his home after a long illness. Born on July 19, 1927 in Greenwich, Ohio he was the son of the late David W. Gumbert and Lois E. (Barker) Gumbert-Sharpless, as well as, a beloved stepfather, Edward C. Sharpless for more than 55 years.
He graduated from Greenwich High School in 1945 and then served in the US Army. He was a Technical Sergeant/Chief Clerk of Post Ordnance on Adak, Aleutian Islands during this time. Upon discharge from the service, he enrolled in the College of Engineering at Ohio State, graduating with a degree in Landscape Architecture and City Planning in 1951. He started a landscaping construction firm in Shelby and continued that business until going to work for General Motors in Mansfield in 1956. He was president of U.A.W. Local #549 during the early years of the Union’s existence.
During his work life, he was employed by a number of Ohio firms in the capacity of Quality Control/Assurance and Personnel Managment. Among those were General Motors of Mansfield, the E.W. Bliss Company of Canton, the Barth Corporation, Dove Die and Stamping, Anchor Tool and Die, Lucas Aerospace, and Foseco Inc. all in Cleveland, and Volvo White Coproation in Orrville.
He had membership in a number of professional organizations: A.S.Q.C., A.S.P.I.C., A.P.M.A. and the American Management Association. Social memberships included the Shelby Jaycees and the American Legion for more than 25 years.
After retirement, Norman did part-time work for Deca Manufacturing of Lexington, the Huron County Department of Human Services in Norwalk and served as Village Administrator in North Fairfield. His hobbies were computor games, reading, boating, cooking and lawn work.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Fogt) Gumbert; a daughter, Vickie Sullivan of Marion; a son, Steve of Summerville, FL; and a son, Marc (Terri) of Shelby. Also included are step-son, Chris (Christine) Leininger of Greenfield, IN; and step-daughter, Lisa Scholes of Willard; twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
A memorial sevice will be held on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Grace United Methodist Church in Willard, Ohio conducted by Reverend Doug Winner and then a private interment in Edwards Grove Cemetery in Greenwich. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Grace Christian Preschool.
